Oia is a former seafaring town at the brink of the northern crater, nesting on a deep slope. It is a fascinating labyrinth of little stairways, round roofs and church-spires amongst old cave dwellings cut from the soft pumice stone. Almost no modernity disturbs the picture. Today Oia has about 500 inhabitants. It is regarded as the perfect example of an idyllic cycladic village. There are dozens of picturesque corners, whitewashed houses, steep flights of steps and blue and pink church-spires. |

In Perissa between Akrotiri and Thera you will find the most beautiful and large beaches with fine black sand. At the left part of these beaches there are many restaurants, bars, discos and other shops. The soft "back side" of the crater presents itself in a charming and typically cycladic style with many vine yards, fields and olive trees. |
